UH Cancer Center Abstracts Selected for ASCO's Annual Meeting
June 2021
Eight abstracts for projects being conducted by researchers at University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center have been selected by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) to be shared at its annual conference. This year’s conference will be held virtually on June 4-8.
ASCO is a diverse network of oncology professionals, whose mission is to conquer cancer through research, education, and promotion of the highest quality of patient care. The society promotes and provides lifelong learning for oncology professionals, cancer research, an improved environment for oncology practice, access to quality cancer care, and a global network of oncology experts, and educated and informed cancer patients.
ASCO’s annual meeting allows attendees to stay up to date with the latest research advances, engage in interactive sessions, and become part of a global oncology community that is committed to achieving equitable cancer care. Abstract submissions are reviewed by ASCO’s Scientific Program Committee and are selected based on the strength of the science, trial design, collaboration, and relevance to the annual meeting.
“It’s exciting to have this many researchers being recognized for their important work. It’s an honor to be recognized by ASCO, and this just goes to show how impactful our research at the UH Cancer Center really is,” said UH Cancer Center Director Randall Holcombe, MD, MBA. “All of these projects address cancer among Hawaiʻi’s unique racial and ethnic populations, which may benefit minority and underserved groups all over the world.”
UH Cancer Center research projects for which abstracts were selected were led by Jared Acoba, MD, Jeffrey Berenberg, MD, MACP, Jami Fukui, MD, and Izumi Okado, PhD. Fukui and collaborators had four abstracts for studies on breast cancer selected for online publication. Berenberg and his colleagues had one abstract selected for presentation and another for online publication. One study on genetic predictors of disparities of medication side effects used in breast cancer, and the other on epithelial ovarian cancer survival rates in different racial/ethnic groups. Okado and her collaborators’ abstract was accepted for an online presentation regarding cancer care coordination, and Acoba’s abstract on a colorectal cancer study was accepted for a poster discussion during the conference. The title and list of authors for each abstract can be found below. Several of the abstracts included medical students and residents who worked on projects under the direction of UH Cancer Center faculty.
